European payments giant Worldline has deepened its integration with global neobank Klarna to scale BNPL across online and in-store checkouts for e-commerce

European payment services leader Worldline and global digital bank Klarna have signed a major framework agreement to expand access to flexible payment options.

The partnership will see Worldline integrate Klarna deeply into its technology stack and handle transaction acquiring, simplifying how merchants deploy these payment methods.

By taking over the backend acquiring process alongside technical integration, the collaboration directly addresses a traditional fintech friction point.

Rather than managing disparate systems for processing and alternative payment methods, merchants will benefit from a unified setup.

A phased rollout

The deployment is scheduled to begin in 2026, targeting different segments of Worldline's extensive merchant network in distinct phases.

The initial rollout will focus on the Global Collect platform, Worldline’s online payment solution tailored for international e-commerce merchants operating in the travel and digital sectors.

Following this, the service will expand to enterprise and small and medium-sized enterprises via Worldline’s GoPay online payment platform.

This phase aims to democratise access to flexible finance through a streamlined, guided onboarding process, removing technical barriers for smaller digital retailers.

The final stage of the agreement will see Worldline extend Klarna’s payment suite, including its popular BNPL services, to physical in-store point of sale terminals.

David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna, explains: “This is a huge step in our mission to make Klarna flexible payments available to everyone, everywhere. Partnering with Worldline, Europe’s largest card acquirer, gives us an incredible opportunity to connect even more businesses with our platform and support consumers everywhere to pay smarter.

“Together, we’re helping merchants grow while giving consumers the increasing levels of choice and convenience they have come to demand and expect.”

Supporting merchant growth

For the fintech sector, the “strengthened partnership” represents a significant convergence between traditional card acquiring infrastructure and alternative payment methods.

Klarna’s offerings – which span immediate payments, interest-free short-term credit and longer-term financing – are designed to enhance checkout convenience.

By embedding these options directly into Worldline's core infrastructure, the partnership allows businesses of all scales to improve customer satisfaction and boost sales volumes.

Markus Frei, Head of Worldline Acquiring Services, comments: “Worldline is thrilled to partner with Klarna to bring innovative payment solutions to businesses of all sizes.

“Leveraging our strong local presence, this collaboration will introduce BNPL services across markets, delivering real value for merchants and consumers alike, whether for online or in-person transactions while driving growth across Europe.”

Expanding global footprint

For Klarna, the alliance scales its distribution network significantly by tapping into one of the continent's largest processing footprints.

The deep technical integration ensures that Klarna becomes a native option within Worldline’s ecosystem rather than an add-on, accelerating the digital bank's physical and digital merchant acquisition strategy.

Klarna currently serves one million retailers with its innovative solutions, utilising Klarna’s customer base of 119 million global active users.

The collaboration introduces BNPL services across multiple markets for both online and in-person transactions.

Similarly, the deal enables the platform to connect with more businesses while providing the choice and convenience consumers expect.

The phased launch will continue through Worldline's e-commerce and point of sale networks.
